Screen Time for Preschoolers: What’s Healthy During the Holidays?

The holiday season is here—filled with family gatherings, cozy days indoors, and lots of excitement for little ones. With extra free time, screens can become tempting. Movies, apps, and video calls can be fun, but balance is key.

How Much Screen Time Is Healthy?

For preschoolers, experts recommend no more than 1 hour per day of high-quality, age-appropriate screen time. During the holidays, a little flexibility is fine—as long as screen use is purposeful and balanced.

Making Screen Time Count

Choose content that teaches letters, numbers, or social skills, encourages interaction or co-viewing, and includes short, predictable sessions. Examples: watching a holiday special together, following a craft video, or video calling distant family.

Holiday Screen-Free Alternatives

Decorating cookies or ornaments, reading festive books, playing outside or going on a nature walk, singing and dancing to holiday music, or simple crafts using household materials. These activities build creativity, fine motor skills, and family connection—without screens.

Finding Balance

The holidays are busy and magical. Screens can be part of the fun—but hands-on play, reading, and family time should remain the priority. Think of screens as a tool, not a default.

This season, give your child the gift of creativity, exploration, and joyful, screen-free moments!

We look forward to hearing from you!
