In Louisiana, the weather can change in the blink of an eye — sunshine one moment, thunderstorms the next. For young children, these sudden shifts can be confusing or even scary. At Pelican Point Preschool, we understand how unpredictable weather can affect little minds and emotions. That’s why we’re here to help parents support their children through it with comfort and confidence.
Simple conversations go a long way. Use calm, age-appropriate language to explain what’s happening during a storm or weather change. For example: Rain helps the plants grow, or “Thunder is just a loud sound that can’t hurt us.”
A small “weather comfort kit” — like a favorite stuffed animal, a cozy blanket, or calming music — can help your child feel safe during noisy storms.
Art, play, and storytelling are great outlets. Drawing a thunderstorm or pretending to be the sun shining after the rain allows children to take control of their feelings in a creative way.
Children feel safest when their day has structure — especially during uncertain weather. Even if plans have to change, keeping familiar routines (like nap time, snack, or story time) helps children feel grounded and reassured that their world is still safe and predictable.
