Fun Autumn Activities for Preschoolers

Fall may look a little different here in Louisiana — less falling leaves, more sunny days — but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy all the fun that autumn brings! At Pelican Point Preschool, we love celebrating the season with hands-on, play-based activities that spark curiosity and creativity in our little learners. Here are some of our favorite fall-inspired ideas for home or school:

Leaf Rubbing Art

Even if you have to gather leaves from a nearby park or use artificial ones, this simple activity is always a hit. Place leaves under a sheet of paper and have your child color over them with crayons to reveal the textures. It’s a great way to talk about nature, colors, and shapes!

Fall Sensory Bins

Create a sensory bin using items like dried corn, small pumpkins, pinecones, cinnamon sticks, and faux leaves. Add scoops and cups to encourage fine motor play. Sensory bins are a fun, calming way to explore textures and smells of the season.

Apple Tasting Party

Pick up a few apple varieties (like Gala, Granny Smith, and Honeycrisp) and have a taste test! Kids love comparing the flavors and picking their favorite. Pair it with apple-themed books like “Ten Apples Up On Top!” for a full learning experience.

DIY Nature Scavenger Hunt

Take a walk outside and create a simple scavenger hunt with items like acorns, pinecones, colorful leaves, or small sticks. This activity encourages observation skills, vocabulary building, and lots of outdoor fun — perfect for curious preschool explorers!

No matter the temperature outside, autumn is the perfect time to slow down, explore nature, and make cozy memories.
