How to Prep Your Child for Preschool in the Fall
Starting preschool is an exciting milestone—for both children and parents! At Pelican Point Preschool, we understand that this transition can bring a mix of excitement, nerves, and lots of questions. Here are some helpful tips to get your child (and you!) ready for the fall:
1. Start Talking About Preschool Early
Begin chatting casually about what preschool is and what your child will do there. Keep it positive and simple: “You’ll get to play, read stories, make art, and meet new friends!”
2. Establish a Consistent Routine
Preschool runs on a predictable daily schedule, so it helps to ease into a similar routine at home in the weeks before school starts. This includes regular bedtimes and wake-up times, a calm morning routine with time for dressing, breakfast, and getting out the door, and set meal/snack times.
3. Ease Separation Anxiety Gently
It’s normal for young children to feel nervous about being apart from their parents. At Pelican Point, we’re experienced in supporting kids (and parents!) through these early goodbyes with warmth and patience.
4. Let Them Practice Independence
Encourage your child to practice preschool skills at home—like putting on shoes, washing hands, and opening snack containers. These small wins build confidence and help the school day go more smoothly.
5. Get Excited Together
Let your child be part of the “getting ready” process. Let them pick a backpack or lunchbox or choose a first-day outfit. You can even create a countdown calendar to build excitement!
