Cutting Down Screen Time: Simple Tips for Busy Families

Summer in Louisiana is full of sunshine, adventure—and yes, a little temptation to rely on screens to keep preschoolers busy. While a bit of screen time can be fine, too much can impact your child’s sleep, behavior, and creativity. At Pelican Point Preschool, we believe in hands-on learning and unplugged play, even during the summer months. Here are a few easy ways to cut down screen time (without the meltdown):

1. Make a Simple Routine

Kids thrive on structure. Plan a daily rhythm with built-in times for outdoor play, snacks, crafts, and quiet time. When kids know what to expect, they’re less likely to ask for a tablet out of boredom.

2. Set Up “Boredom Bins”

Create bins filled with books, puzzles, blocks, or sensory toys. Rotate them weekly to keep things fresh and exciting without needing a screen.

3. Get Outside—Louisiana Style!

Look for shade, grab some water, and let the backyard or neighborhood park become your play zone. Nature walks, bug hunts, or sidewalk chalk art are all screen-free winners.

4. Involve Them in Everyday Tasks

Let your child help with simple chores like sorting laundry, washing veggies, or making lemonade. It builds confidence—and keeps their minds engaged.

Cutting down screen time doesn’t mean cutting out fun. With a little creativity and consistency, your child can enjoy a summer full of real-world learning, laughter, and Louisiana sunshine.
