Keeping Kids Safe at Home This Summer

As the summer heats up here in Louisiana, it’s important for parents to take a few extra steps to keep their little ones safe, cool, and comfortable during these sunny days. At Pelican Point Preschool, we focus on these strategies—and you can use them at home too!

Hydration is Key

Make water easily accessible and fun to drink! Offer plenty of water throughout the day, especially after playing outside. Consider using reusable water bottles with fun, summer-themed designs—kids are more likely to sip from bottles they love.

Practice Sun Safety

Apply sunscreen before outdoor play and reapply every two hours—or after water activities. Try to plan outdoor time in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Cool-Down Activities

Bring the fun home with water play! Kiddie pools, sprinklers, ice painting, or sensory bins with chilled sponges and water beads are all great ways to keep cool and engaged. Always supervise water play closely—even shallow water.

Let’s make this summer fun, safe, and full of memories your child will cherish. If you have other ideas that work for your family, we’d love to hear them!
