The start of a new year is a wonderful time for reflection, growth, and setting intentions. While many of us make resolutions for ourselves, it can also be a fun and meaningful experience to create resolutions with your little one. At Pelican Point Preschool, we believe that involving children in this tradition can help teach valuable lessons about goal-setting, persistence, and self-improvement. Here’s how to make New Year’s resolutions together!
For young children, resolutions should be simple and framed in a positive way. Instead of focusing on things to “stop,” try setting goals that involve things they can do more of, like “I will share my toys with friends” or “I will try a new vegetable this week.” This helps foster a growth mindset and encourages positive habits.
Kids love visuals, so create a fun way to track their progress. You could use a sticker chart, a goal poster, or even a “resolution tree” where each leaf represents a small achievement. Watching their progress can give children a sense of accomplishment and motivate them to keep going!
Involve the whole family in setting resolutions. Sit down together and talk about goals you want to achieve, both individually and as a family. This promotes a sense of unity and shows children that everyone, no matter their age, can work towards self-improvement.
Help your little one celebrate small milestones along the way. If their resolution is to read one new book each week, celebrate when they finish a book! Recognition of their effort reinforces positive behaviors and encourages them to continue striving for their goals.
It’s important to remember that goals don’t always go as planned. Show your child that it’s okay to stumble, and teach them that it’s not about perfection but about trying again. Whether it’s a missed resolution or a challenge they encounter, model resilience and adaptability—key qualities for success in life!
At Pelican Point Preschool, we believe that learning can (and should) be fun! Keep the process lighthearted by incorporating play, creative activities, or even crafting a “vision board” together. This will help keep your little one engaged and excited about their goals.
At the end of the year (or as often as you’d like), take some time to reflect on the resolutions you made. What did your little one accomplish? What would they like to work on next year? This reflection helps children understand the value of setting and achieving goals—and provides a great opportunity to celebrate their progress!
