Encouraging Thankfulness in Your Child This Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, it’s the perfect time to cultivate a spirit of gratitude in our little ones. At Pelican Point Preschool, we believe that teaching children to appreciate what they have helps them grow into compassionate individuals. Here are some fun and engaging ways to encourage thankfulness this holiday season!

1. Create a Gratitude Tree

Start a family tradition by making a gratitude tree. Simply cut out a tree shape from paper or cardboard and hang it in a prominent place. Have your child write or draw something they are thankful for on paper leaves, then attach them to the tree. This visual representation will remind everyone of the many blessings in their lives.

2. Thanksgiving Crafts

Crafting is a wonderful way to express gratitude! Here are a few simple ideas: – Handprint Turkeys: Use your child’s handprints to create a turkey and add words or pictures of what they’re thankful for around it. – Gratitude Jars: Decorate a jar and fill it with notes of gratitude. Encourage your child to write down one thing they’re thankful for each day leading up to Thanksgiving.

3. Thank You Notes

Teach your child the importance of expressing gratitude by writing thank-you notes. Whether it’s to family members, friends, or teachers, this practice helps children recognize the efforts of others and express their appreciation.

4. Thankfulness Discussions

Make it a habit to talk about gratitude during family meals. Ask open-ended questions like, “What was the best part of your day?” or “Who made you smile today?” This encourages your child to think about and articulate the things they are thankful for.

5. Volunteer Together

Involve your child in giving back to the community. Whether it’s helping to collect food for a local shelter or participating in a community clean-up, these activities teach children the value of helping others and foster a sense of gratitude for what they have.

6. Storytime with Gratitude Themes

Incorporate books that emphasize gratitude into your reading routine. Stories like “Bear Says Thank You” by Karma Wilson or “Thank You, Omu!” by Oge Mora can spark discussions about thankfulness and sharing.

7. Family Gratitude Rituals

Establish a family tradition, such as sharing one thing you’re thankful for at dinner each night or creating a gratitude scrapbook filled with pictures and memories from the year.

By integrating these practices into your family’s Thanksgiving celebrations, you can help your child develop a deeper appreciation for their experiences and the people around them. At Pelican Point Preschool, we’re thankful for our wonderful families and the joy your children bring to our community. Wishing you all a happy and gratitude-filled Thanksgiving! 🍂🦃✨

We look forward to hearing from you!
