Halloween is an exciting time of the year for kids. However, for parents, it is a time accompanied by stress and anxiety for their kid’s safety. Here are tips that will ensure Halloween is not only a fun-filled one but safe for your kids.

1. Costume Safety

To ensure your kids have a safe holiday, choose the right costume. The costume should not be a safety hazard. Here are tips to follow when choosing a costume:

  • Choose bright and reflective costumes. You can add reflective tape to your kid’s costume to increase visibility at night.
  • Make sure the costumes you buy have the label “flame retardant” which means the costume can’t burn.
  • Put your name tag and phone number on your kid’s costume.
  • Have short and flexible wands.
  • Ensure the shoes fit well to avoid them falling.

2. Always Accompany Your Kids for Their Trick or Treat Rounds

If your older kids are going alone, ensure the route they’ll use is acceptable to you. Let your children know the specific time they should return home and give them a flashlight. If you have younger children, check for activities that take part earlier in the day.

3. Drive Safely

When driving on Halloween,  slow down in residential neighborhoods.  Children can move in unpredictable ways during Halloween.  You should also be careful when entering or exiting driveways. Do not use your phone and focus on the road.

4. Teach Your Kids Never to enter a Stranger’s Home or Car

When your kids go out for trick and treat, you have to tell them to notify the authorities of any unlawful activity. They should not take any treats from strangers’ cars.

5. Teach them to Walk Safely

When your children are going trick or treating, give them instructions on how to walk safely. The following are tips you can give your children.

  • Use traffic signals and crosswalks when crossing at corners.
  • Always walk on sidewalks.
